SHIP'S ANCHOR
"OVER 200? YEAR'S OLD"
Recently recovered from the North Sea
It is a Old Wooden stock type. Overall size is 80 inches High x 82 inches Wide
Heavily encrusted, so all sizes "approximate" due to wasting etc.
Forged steel round Shank 4-1/2" at base, and 3-1/4" at stock.
Forged steel Flukes Each was 15" wide x 20" long, with a strengthening 3" x 3" square web
The stock Ring is 1.9" diameter and 7-1/4" inside, 11-1/2" outside diameter
The 82" long wooden stock is 10" square in centre, to 6" square at ends, and was constructed in 2 halves with 1-1/4" wooden dowels. It appears (under the growth) that 4 steel bands secured the two halves.
Marine archaeologists have confirmed it is an early anchor, and over 200 years old.
The long forged chain has a link size of 5" x 3-1/4" but it is thought unlikely to be as old as the anchor, so we assume that this anchor could have belonged to an old ship that had its chain renewed just before its tragic loss.
